The Advantages Of Using MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
In this advanced world, a lot of developments take place in every field. There are newer and more advance technologies to make life easier and make everything convenient. In computer technology, a new network is innovated to bridge the gap between Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). This new network is called the MAN - Metropolitan Area Network which a high-tech type of network that has many advantages over other types of network.
For linking of various networks in a campus, metropolitan area, community or any city, Metropolitan Area Network is used. It has wider coverage than Local Area Network (LAN) but a bit smaller from Wide Area Network. LAN is only confined on one floor, building or room and it cannot go beyond the wall of an establishment. The Wide Area Network (WAN) on the other hand can reach many cities that are far away. MAN falls in between the geographical scope of both LAN and WAN.
If the networks are far away from each other such as building after building distances, MAN is helpful. It can connect several networks up to 50 kilometers far from each other. Local Area Networks can be used to communicate within the office and it can also be used to link several small networks to make another big network in order to make a secure communication system.
Local Area Networks that are connected with the help of MAN is linked together using a backbone line. The line is composed up of fiber optic which is installed along subway tunnels. Many are using the fiber line because it can be removed and be replaced easily if more high-tech and sophisticated lines come out in the area of technology.
Some owners of Metropolitan Area Network use infrared or laser radio because it can get expensive if cables are used. MAN can reach up to 50 kilometer distance and if cables made of fiber optic are used, the cost will be too high. To prevent spending too much on the installation of MAN, alternatives are being used by owners to cut on costs.
Metropolitan Area Network is widely used today because of its high speed. The standard protocol for MAN is or Distributed Queue Dual Bus Defined (DQDB) IEEE 802.6 and this can reach up to 30 Km distance with a speed of 34 to 155 Megabytes per second. The other protocols of MAN are Broadband Wireless MAN Standard (WIMAX) IEEE 802.16, Asynchronous Transfer Made Protocol (ATM), and others.
MAN - Metropolitan Area Network is widely used in campuses, business and organization today because it has some advantages. Using the technology provides convenience for all such as linking several networks to build one big network. MAN also provides secure network sharing because the data are encrypted to prevent it from being tampered during transfer.
